Rob Reynolds – Five Laws of Product Development for Education in the 21st Century – XplanaZine (Via Stephen’s Web ~ by Stephen Downes ~ OLDaily RSS 2.0.) “As education changes, so must the way we conceive of and develop products for education. From textbooks to simulations, content and product providers of all kinds (publishing companies to private schools) must rethink the way they do business.”
These are principles that cry out for games (and as it says, simulations) in education. Read/write web products clearly fit the bill, too.
The real question, though, is whether or not educational institutions are ready for these products, and I think their lack of readiness may account for the lack of 21st century development in educational markets. Perhaps this is a chicken and egg scenario, but I doubt it. Developers have certainly adapted in other industries. From where I sit, it is the institutions (and laws that govern them) that are holding things back in education.
